What can I do with drive "D" my recovery drive?

What is the Recovery (D) Hard Disk Drive for?

  • I'm fairly good with computers, but one thing I don't understand is that why did my computer come with this Hard Drive? It is la belled: RECOVERY (D:) and it contains some folders like Dell, program files, and windows. What is this hard drive for? Also, it has some space available, can I use it to store some stuff on it?

  • Answer:

It's not an actual drive. It's a partition. This means they split the drive into parts. That one partition will have your recovery stuff on it. It won't get messed with (viruses etc). You usually CAN'T open it. But if you have your recovery discs made (they stop giving them out) and you are really, really sure you want to do it, you can delete that partition to free up space. This is because your recovery discs will make a partition again when you restore. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_do_you_remove_a_partition_on_your_hard_drive The second answer tells you how. I don't trust programs doing stuff for me. It's actually rather simple. But do this at your own risk. And do NOT delete your active partition (the biggest one). You will kill your system.

It is a partition drive, with a mirror image of the computer in it's factory condition. When you run the recovery manager, you can reformat you computer, and it copies the recovery drive onto the other section of the harddrive, which you use. Because it is a partition, it typically will not allow you or other files to alter it or copy onto it. It is useful when you are experiencing problems such as viruses, and need to get rid of them without digging out your windows cd's.

This is your recovery partition. Manufacturers such as Dell and the other big ones partition off a section of the hard drive and put the recovery files on that partition instead of sending customers/end-users physical discs such as CDs or DVDs. I do not recommend storing files inside the partition (D:) or deleting files from that partition unless you have another means over recovery (factory reinstall).

Its the manufactures default operating system. Its use is when you can recover windows and you want to start from dirt you boot your computer and its called system recovery it deletes everything on your computer and installs the version of windows that computer came with.

This is a partition on your drive. It can be used to restore your computer back to the way it was when it was new. There is usually a key you would press during bootup to use it. I would not store anything there.

You can recover your os using that recovery drive when your system got crashed its a quick way to get your os reinstalled

it is a recovery partition if you need to restore computer to factory direct without the use of recovery discs.
