Simple and best answer: Add more RAM. 4 gb is enough for most users and if you are running the 32-bit version of Vista it won't recognize more anyway. Free and less effective answer: Speed up boot time by keeping the amount of programs that start up at boot time to a minimum. Antivirus is ok, but having MSN + Nero Quickstart + MS Office + whathaveyou all boot up as soon as you start the pc will increase the time it takes till you reach a workable desktop. Make sure you defragment your pc regularly, once a month is fine. Also run a registry cleaning program regularly if you install/uninstall programs a lot, this can leave stray files and empty entries contributing to system slow down.
