The volume control on the system tray doesn't work?

sound comes from the CPU speakers even after switching it off on the control panel, on the system tray. i tried plugging a headset to shut the sound or at least make it private but the sound comes through both the listening devices i.e headphones and the CPU speakers. help!

Answer:
Right click your Sound Icon, open the Volume Mixer. You should have two options. 1. For Device Speakers 2. Applications - Sounds ' Mute the Applications - Sounds if you want to mute sounds, like open and close, mouse gestures etc. Mute Device Speakers if you want to stop sounds like music etc Hope this helps.
