Are all PS3 Blu-Ray Drives Interchangeable?

New PS3 Hard-drives?

  • Alright so I am finally upgrading my 80 GB ps3 to a 160 GB, or more if I can find a good deal. Anyways when I went on amazon to see the hard-drives for sale I found 2 that seemed like good ps3 hard-drives but only 1 looked like a ps3 hard-drive. I know this is what the hard-drives should look like when your buying it for the ps3: http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Momentus-5400-3-ST9160821AS-internal/dp/B000TMDSK8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1214264378&sr=1-1 But right next to it I spotted another hard-drive which had 7200rpm while the other had just 5400rpm. http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Momentus-7200-2-ST9160823AS-internal/dp/B0014Q8CEA/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1214264378&sr=1-2 Can the 2nd hard-drive run on a ps3 properly or can just the 1st one?

  • Answer:

the standard PS3 hard drive spins at 5400 RPM, so it might be a bad idea to pop in a 7200 RPM HDD. although I have heard about some people using the seagate momentus. I have heard that 2.5 inch notebook drives can work as well, but Id do a bit more research if I were you. but I dont forsee any problems, since the ps3 uses SATA hard drives. the only question mark is wether it's OS is installed on the drive, or somewhere esle on it. but I suspect the latter, if that is indeed the case then other than formatting the drive before you use it (from within the ps3's menu) and using antistatic gloves (IT'S NOT A CASE OF MIGHT, IT'S A CASE OF WILL" to avoid killing the drive.
