How can I transfer my 8MM video tapes to my computer?

What pc equipment is needed to transfer old 8mm camcorder video tapes onto DVDs?

  • I have several old family 8mm that I would like to place onto DVDs. The 8mm tapes are about 15 years old and the camcorder that I had has been exhausted for some time. I am hoping to purchase PC equipment so I can transfer these to DVDs for th entire family. Thanks

    This is the 3rd question I'm answering today about vcr to computer hardware. Thank God for Copy & Paste! You need to get another 8mm camera with video output jacks or an 8mm tape player. Unless there's some video company which can convert the tapes for you (check your local Yellow Pages), then you'll have to get that 8mm camera/player first, then: I answered a question like this not too long ago, so I copied and pasted the text: There are 2 ways to go here. Method 1: Buy a home DVD recorder and connect it to your VCR. To edit the video on the DVD, you'll need a DVD drive for your computer and DVD editing software for it - the editing software can be pretty expensive. Just Google search 'DVD editor.' Method 2: Buy a video capture device for your computer. Some of these devices have a built-in tuner as well. Most, if not all capture devices have both S-video and composite video inputs to record from. You can buy a USB device or a PCI capture device. Some of these devices also have a small video editing program included too. Below is a link to a site where you can view some examples of video capture devices. You might also want to look at the customer product reviews too.

I might advise you to take the tapes to a place that can remaster the tapes to DVD. It should be cheaper and easier and the quality should be a lot better then can be done at home. Of course you can then copy the DVDs for all your family members.
