How to choose LCD Panel?

Mounting LCD to side panel of atx case?

  • I'm planning on drilling holes into the side panel of the old atx case i have (the side panel comes off, not the one that exposes the components, but the other side), and mounting an old "17 lcd to it. that panel is on the same side as the backside of the mob(mounted to a panel, and then the panel i plan on using covers it) Wondering if the heat from the monitor will adversely affect the mobo, and/or how much heat will be actually generated. if a lot, is there any way to fabricate a heat-shield/barrier to place in between the monitor and the panel? no, this isn't something normally done. I just have an old desktop I pieced together out of old components that i plan on using as a netflix/movie center, and would like it to be relatively portable (insofar as I can pick up the thing, put it in car, drive to gfs, etc. without having to take 2 trips, one for monitor and one for case) I'm also planning on fabricating some tie-mounts on the top of the desktop, for the keyboard and mouse. possibly side mounts of some sort for some old speakers I have, and another top mount for a small 1 to 3 power outlet converter (which will have an extension cord plugged into it, which will then travel to a wall outlet, to only occupy 1 outlet) ultimately sort of a hobo's laptop, lol. Not optimal, bulky and ugly, but a fun project. ultimately tho, need to kno if the monitors heat will be an issue, as mentioned. If you want a picture of this beast after I'm done with it, just shoot me an email thru here and when it's done I'll mail u one

  • Answer:

i would try to mount it on the side away from the mobo, the small gap under the mobo would have no ventalation and depending on how much heat is thrown out from your monitor could cause serious overheating. I would mount it on the siide that has the removable side panel. the only way i can explain it would be to mount it using some sort of bracket, and hang it on the pc like a saddle bag on a horse, but with rigid bracket, attached at toop of pc, so so its not attached to removable panel. (sorry if you dont understand, i cant think of another way to explain what i mean. Maybe your monitor does not peoduce much heat ? and mounting it where you want will be fine.

I would say the heat issue is the other way around from what you're thinking. I think the heat from your computer will likely cause the monitor itself to run overly warm and prematurely fail.

I wouldn't think heat from the monitor would be an issue, they don't get that hot, espicaly if you say it's an old computer it that probably doesn't get very hot to begin with.
