URGENT HELP - missing icon in control panel - what do I do now?

a file which i thought was 'windows messenger' from 'remove hardware' was accidentally deleted. when my computer was turned on again after restarting, the I.Explorer icon was gone from desktop and 'START' list. I was not able to start IE. i manage to find IE icon through shortcut. I also restore the outlook express icon from desktop. when i go into control panel again after this- the FIRST icon, presumable REMOVE HARDWARE icon is missing! how do i add this icon back? (is this enough? I mean have i lost some files?) OR Hve i lost some files through this accidental deletion? Since I am using windows XP, is it best to restore to factory setting again? if i need to restore to factory setting, how do i back up my files including my email address book & favourites in IE? (please provide links where possible) PLEASE HELP! thanks!
Answer:

IF you did accidentaly delete some system critical files don't worry. If your using windows XP your can do a repair just make sure you have your cd with you. Boot with and choose the repair option, (don't press r, that's recovery console"). everything will be restored as normal but you will have to windows updates again. Also makes sure you use a service pack 2 cd. All mail and links will still be intact

right click on your desktop and go to propterties. Click on the 'Desktop' tap in the window that pops up. Then click the Customize Desktop button at the bottom of the window. In the next window that pops up, check the box next to 'Internet explorer' at the top of it. Click Okay at the bottom. Click Okay at the bottom of the last window and there you have your icon back.
