Hypothetical question about motherboard and CPU?

Motherboard update question - Will the motherboard boot up enough to flash it to support this CPU?

  • This motherboard: http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Model=A780GXE/128M&s=AM2%2b I purchased it off of NewEgg, and I'm curious as to how the bios update will work. I've done bios updates in the past, but on current systems with a working CPU. However, I need to update the bios in this motherboard to support the CPU that will be put in it, an AMD Phenom II (http://www.asrock.com/mb/cpu.asp?Model=A780GXE/128M&s=AM2%2b). Will I be able to boot up a CD to run the bios update, despite the fact that the motherboard may not work with the processor until it is updated? I don't have another compatible processor to use, so I hope it will work!

  • Answer:

no your computer won't even POST without a recognizable cpu, and no POST means no system, so to answer your question, yes you'll need an older CPU that is recognizable by your motherboard, update the bios, then you can use your new cpu, my best advice, buy an old one, boot up and install new bios then return the old one and get your money back,
