Difference between intel dual core, core duo, and core 2 duo?

i am looking to buy a netbook but got swamped with all these techie terms. 1. can somebody explain, in layman's terms, the difference between intel dual core, core duo, and core 2 duo? 2. do they have AMD equivalents? if so, what are they? 3. would a dual core 1.6 GHz netbook run just the same as a core duo 1.6 GHz netbook? why or why not?

Think of "Dual Core" as "a burger", "Core Duo" as "Big Mac", and "Core 2 Duo" as "Big 'N Tasty". That's about as laymen's-terms as you can get. Dual-core is a type of processor. Core Duo and Core 2 Duo are specific families of dual-core processors produced by Intel, Core 2 Duo being newer (and usually faster) than the older Core Duo family.
