Now I want to go more advanced, for example ram or cache or graphics card. first how can i find out what is the size of my existing ram, cache and graphics card ? Also which one mostly out of the three i have mentioned will make my pc run faster? to be honest i myself dont know what exactly those cards are and which will work best to make my pc run faster, so i need your advice. just been searching about how i can make my pc run faster and came across these cards that were mentioned, and so i'm totally confused and need your help! for your information, i have a windows xp, pentium 4 computer. thanks for any answers in advance!

hi kol, there is many ways to "tweak" your p.c to make it run faster ,including overclocking, defragging, and editing certain options in windows, however these are all software based enhancements and can sometimes affect other applications and software the only sure fire way to make your p.c go faster is hardware upgrades such as a memory upgrade or a processor upgrade so we will start with your memory, first go to http://www.crucial.com/ and run the online memory tool, this will give you a report on exactly which memory to use in your p.c,you can then buy directly from crucial or another online retailer memory upgrades are the easiest of all upgrades, simply open your p.c,s case and locate the memory slots(banks) and wearing a anti-static wristband gently insert your memory into the memory slot until the two white clips lock into place at either end, then double check it before closing your p.c case,if theres any error beeps when you boot up,simply open your case and repeat the above method but change the memorys position now for the processor..this is sligtly harder than a memory upgrade, once you have found the correct slot/socket type your motherboard uses, amd normally use socket AM2 and intel use socket LGA775 most processors are cooled using a heatsink and fan, these are removed by unclipping or unscrewing the retaining clip either side of the heatsink, however check with your motherboards manual for the correct way to remove your processor ,allways make sure you unlock the processor arm lock that holds the processor in place before you try to remove the heatsink, this is because some heatsinks like the pentium 4 heatsinks are hard to remove and you can accidentally bend the processor pins if you are not careful inserting a new processor is easy, simply drop the processor into the sockets and lock down the arm, apply a thin layer of thermal compound and apply the heatsink, then screw the fan to the heatsink,or lock down the famn assembly then locate the cpu-fan power socket and insert the cpu power lead as for the graphics, open the case and locate the agp or pci-express slot and unplug any power connector and then unscrew the screw from the case, then remove the graphics card from its slot, agp cards have a white locking clip, press this in after unscrewing the card, this will help the card out of its agp slot take your new card and insert into the agp/pci-express slot, for agp press in until the white clip locks into place,pci-express slot in as per normal close the case after making sure the card is securely fitted and close the case, boot up your p.c and when windows loads it will recognize the new card as a new device, cancel any prompts and when ready install the latest drivers from the appropriate website, never use the bundled driver disks from the box as these can be up to three years out of date, after installing the drivers restart the p.c and your card is installed, then set your resolution and refresh rates to your desired settings, the card is installed ! another good upgrade is the power supply or better known as the p.s.u low wattage power supplys (250watt) can cause bad performance of graphic cards and hard drives, well basically all your hardware will relish from a psu upgrade,a 500watt or more power supply is plenty for any p.c using a single line graphic card,if using two graphic cards as in s.l.i or crossfire then a 650watt or more psu is recommended,to fit one of these simply open you case and remove all power connectors from all hardware and peripherals, then unscrew the power supply from the case and remove the unit then fit the new one and using the same screws screw the new power supply unit into place and attach all power connectors to the hardware and peripherals, double check this and make sure every device has its power supply(double check and remember the graphic card requires power) finally back to software, allways be aware of so called p.c speed-up and optimizer programs, these only work by sacrificing other parts of windows such as the display and can turn your nice looking windows xp into a something that resembles a windows 95 486 p.c,so you have been warned one program that is quite good is "advanced windowscare personal" from http://www.iobit.com/,this is a one click solution and will speed your p.c up by cleaning the rubbish from various parts of windows,it includes a spyware scan, registry scan and it deletes temporary files folder, and it also gives you a option to edit your start up items, this can make your p.c start up faster which is a common complaint from windows users my initial recommendation is a memory upgrade, its allways best to double your current memory,so if you currently have 512mb ram then its best to upgrade to 1024mb(1gb) of ram, however the more the better, this upgrade is the best way to visibly see a performance boost in your p.c any future advice or help do not hesitate to contact me,i will gladly assist you with any upgrades hope this helps good luck kol !

Use SiSoft Sandra to discover what your system specs are. Cache is part of your cpu so you can't change that without a little bit of hassle. Better to ad more memory in the first instance. Go to crucial.com and use the scanner to find the appropriate memory you need. Then make a note of it and search the copmuter shops online and highstreet, for the best deal for that memory. If you can add a graphics card (it depends on your computer - go to the manufacturer's site) this will improve performance for graphics heavy programs, such as most modern games. You could also close any unwanted programs while you're working. HTH.

some computers have on board graphics cards these take some of your installed ram to run them. to make your computer run farster i sugest upgrading ram chips. to see how much ram you are running click on start move mouse pointer to my computer and right click go to properties and then you will see on the botom right hand corner of the pop up box all the details you need. another way to get pc up and runnig faster if you have had it a while is to use the recovery cd that came with the pc and re install windows ( dont panic just follow the on screen promts its easy ) just remember to put all data and documents you want to keep on to a cd first

Okay. Now purchasing RAM is fairly cheap now and is very simple to install. If you were to upgrade your graphics card. This would entail installing software and checking it is operational with your computer. Cache im afraid can't be changed. I would reccomend you upgrade your computers RAM. You can do this by going down to your local PC World or any computer store and im sure they would advise you on what type of RAM you would need. They would, on a 90% chance, stock that RAM as well. If not point you to the right direction. Hope this helps. Any questions you can email me . . . [email protected] Cheers, TRACKER Network & Operations Manager
