How to transfer installed programs from old computer to new?

Can you transfer programs from one computer to another with a USB flash drive?

  • I will be purchasing a new laptop soon, and I have several programs installed on my desktop that I want to transfer to my new laptop without having to install of the programs over again to the new laptop. Does a USB flash drive allow you to do this? I'm not sure if it does because you have to INSTALL programs on computers...so are programs able to be installed onto another computer with a flash drive or not?

  • Answer:

No. You must re-install the programs. Files can indeed be transferred via USB flash drive, CD, DVD, or floppy disk (that is if you even have those around still). If you're worried because you lost the instillation DVD, you can contact the company and they will either mail you a new one, or offer to let you download it from the Internet, however, you will have to prove that one of their programs was registered to you to begin with. To do that, open the program in question, and go to "about _____" (insert program name there). A box should pop up that says the name it was registered to, and should have a little button to show you the serial number. When you contact the company to get the new DVD or whatever, you will have to reference all that info. It helps to have an idea of when you purchased and registered your program. Good luck!!

You can use the USB flash drive to transfer the installation files and associated personal files but you will have to install it again on the new pc/laptop.

no matter what you will have to install the programs, but even transferring the files may or may not work depending on the program because of software liscencing.

hey

no...you need to buy an external harddrive...some are actually pretty inexpensive and compact...when you go to open the program it will say it has been moved and won't let you.

It depends on the size of the flash drive and the size of the programs you want to transfer. If you have a 2 GB flash drive, you can transfer 2 GB of space from the flash drive to your new computer at the same time. All a flash drive is, is RAM that us used as a disk connected via a USB port. RAM can be used as a hard drive. RAM is actually much faster. The reason we use Hard Drives is because RAM is expensive and spinning metal disks holding information is much cheaper and doesn't need the speed RAM gives. The information on RAM needs to be fast. But as long as the information you want to transfer is <= the size of the flash drive, you can.

no, 1st you would need an external hard drive to move files from one place to another and then you still can't transfer programs. You need the .exe files or installation discs for that.

i think so.yeah.

if the installation file will fit on the USB drive, then sure you can copy the file to the laptop and install it there. however, with most programs today you can not just 'copy/paste' the files and folders for it to run properly.
