How long will the Duo Core 2 will stick around?

If core duo means Dual core then what is the 2 mean in the core 2 duo?

  • Please I want straight answer or at least point me to some useful resource, I really want to understand this thing, Intel Confused so many people with it's products. Core duo, core 2 duo, Centrino Duo, Dual Core, Core extreme, I mean WHAT the HELL??? WHY??

  • Answer:

horribly confusing nomenclature those from intel and if you have not been following developments ... yes, it's horribly confusing indeed to start with, they are all dual core processors meaning 2 cores in single die or casing just as the quad core has 4 cores in single die or casing Core duo, core 2 duo, Centrino Duo, Dual Core, Core extreme ... these are all intel nomenclature i. core duo > this is the first generation of dual core processors, but only mobile processors those t2x00 / t2x50 > 32 bit processors with 2 mb l2 cache this was followed by, ii. core 2 duo > these are both mobile processors t5xx0 / t7x00 > 64 bit processors with 2 mb & also 4 mb l2 cache and desktop processors, e4x00 / e6x00 > 64 bit processors with 2 mb & also 4 mb l2 cache in between, intel slipped in a new budget line 'pentium dual core' ., catering both mobile and later desktop processors t2060 / t2080 / t2130 / t2330 > 32 bit processors with 1 mb l2 cache e2140 / e2160 > 64 bit processors with 1 mb l2 cache centrino duo > this is not a processor, but an intel term in mobile category to indicate use of "intel processor + intel chipset + intel wifi" >> the processor could be core duo or core 2 duo core 2 extreme > a premium line, as the name suggests, they form the upper segment of the core 2 duo family and both mobile and desktop variants are available hope i could clear some bit ... and sure it will take some time to sink in, lol another tool to make you understand best is benchmarking, http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmarklist.2436.0.html

Alright, I will try to differentiate each processor product for you. The Core Duo processor are the first native dual core processors from Intel. (Second if you count the Pentium D.). The Core 2 Duo processor is an improved model of that (That's why there a "2" between the core and duo.) Centrino is Intel's processor for Laptops. Centrino Duo is Intel's dual core processor for laptops (This processor is based on Core 2 Duo as well.) Intel Pentium Dual Core processors are budget Core 2 Duo's (This means they are the poorest performing core 2 duo's. Not to mention they seem to intend to rely on the Pentium name for this one.) Core 2 Extreme is Intel's fastest processors that use the Core 2 Duo chip. This is usually the fastest available Core 2 Duo processors, hence the "extreme" in labeling. Hope that helps.

It means its the second version of that model. Just like Pentium 4 was the 4th version/edition of the Pentium Chip. Core 2 duo is the second in the chip set. They might come out with Core 3 duo?

Hey man, I'm pretty sure the 2 from core 2 duo means the 2nd generation or the 2nd model that they have made. Its kind've like the Intels actually too. Hope I helped, Tyler

Mostly, it's just marketing hype to make you think you're getting more than you are.

r_moulton76

the 2 is for 2 cores...duo is just a advertising brand name...means cannot use "duo" trademark in other products brand ....there is already quad core and they call it "Core 2 Quad"

Its just advertising lingo. Like 'pro-revitalizing' and 'dermatological'. Sometimes nonsense statements get stuck in the language because of popular culture. Often you can find the real (sensible) trade name for a product if you hunt around. This is the name that the engineers use before the advertising wing put 'spin' on the product. Java or MS Windows are good examples of this.

faceface

Pentium 4, means the "4th" generation of Pentium, same with Core 2, "2nd" generation of the Core architecture. The Duo there says that it's a dual core processor (There's also Core 2 Solo and Core 2 Quadro, but that's another story :)

First came the Core Duo. Then the Core 2 Duo. Its the second model Core Duo to come out.
