What is the difference between a DVD-R &DVD RW (D)?

What is the difference between dvd-rw and dvd+rw?

  • Answer:

There are broadly two alliances for DVD standards. The "DVD+RW" alliance headed by companies like HP, Dell, Sony, Philips, etc. The "DVD-RW" format was developed by Pioneer in November 1999 and has been approved by the "DVD Forum". Now there are not many difference between the 2 standards other than the fact they are manufactured by companies belonging either to the DVD+RW alliance and the DVD Forum. One has a + and the other has a - sign. Perhaps they are opposites. I'm kidding. The other two answers are very good. However keep in mind that you need to try a few brands of each different kind to find out which ones your DVD reader can handle better. Some drives handle + better than - and others handle - better than +. It depends on how your drive reacts to it. Knowing which one works better for most people doesn't mean it will work better for you, so be sure to test it yourself.

They use a different encoding format. DVD-R's are usually more compatible with consumer DVD players. See the below link for LOTS of details.
