My computer is slow, what can i do to make it faster?

  • I have removed all unnecessary stuff from it and now I have 83% free space on it. I have also defragmented it, but it is still very slow. Please what else can I do? Thanks

Other than the installing RAM, which is pretty fail-safe, you have begun the first steps to speeding up your computer. With the assumption that you are using a Windows platform, patience is the next thing. Removing unused programs is a great step, but it actually temporarily slows your computer down. I believe it was the XP edition (don't quote me there) that really boasted user-memory performance, meaning: applications that are not used often are made dormant. As you remove programs from your computer, you are making them active, therefore disbursing your systems RAM. It shouldn't take long for your computer to 'learn' you again and begin to speed back up. Another quick hint, if you have multiple users, make them their own log-on profiles. What this does is when you sign on, your computer recognizes the programs that you use most-frequently and optimizes your computer for that. When Joe-Blow uses the computer and signs on, it will optimize itself for the programs he uses most frequently. It's actually pretty cool! Definitely do not have multiple users all using the same log-on profile, definitely don't 'click' around too much, and definitely give it a little time... the more you use your computer, the faster it will actually become. If you cease using a program that is less than say .1% of your available harddrive space, just don't use it anymore...you don't even have to remove it...cool, huh? Good luck to you!!

buy more RAM for it.

Get better hardware. If you are using large or a lot of programs, you may be lacking RAM. If so, then purchase more RAM. If you aren't lacking in RAM, then it won't make things go any faster. You may need a faster CPU or hard disk drive. Run some systems analysis to check. If you just want your computer to run how it used to, then you've found one of the major downfalls of Microsoft Windows. Unlike modern, professional operating systems (such as Mac OS X or Linux), Windows' performance degrades over time. A fresh install will get your old speed back quickly and easily. As an alternative, you're looking at a long and complicated trek. Defrag several times, including the page file. Uninstall all programs you don't use. Check your programs at startup, and disable anything you don't want. Fix all registry errors. Compact the registry bloat. Again, unlike Mac OS X and Linux, Windows is plagued with viruses. Check for malware and remove if found. Run a single, integrated suite not multiple small ones.
