Hp photosmart c4680 wont scan?

i have the photosmart c4680 and it wont scan when i press scan and go to scan to PC it says scan error: try scan from computer or see documenation. Press OK. i have no idea what to do, i reinstalled my software and when it tells me to plug everything in and start up my product, i cant press next or press back, so i just press the square box; then i tried going into hp solution center but it tells me Please plug in the USB cable or re-run the setup program from the installation CD for a network installation. what do i do??!???!
Answer:

I solved this problem by uninstalling the HP Photosmart software which came with the printer. When I attempted to add the printer the software update hung, so I quit it and then restarted the computer. The software update then ran successfully and I can now scan. It is nice to be able to scan from within Preview. The experience is better than with the HP Photosmart software.
