Scanning pictures for a scrapbook?

I want to scan pictures from when I was little and make a digital scrapbook with them. I am going to have to buy a scanner for this. Question is when you scan a photo what format will it be in? I would like to have it just like the ones that come off of my camera (i think they are .jpg). Do the scanners come with a program for this or is it a setting? Or will I need to buy software? I've never done much with a scanner and would like to have some idea of how it will work before I go buy one.

Every scanner that I've ever owned, or known about, comes with software that enables you to scan and save your picture files in .jpg format. Even if a scanner doesn't come with the requisite software, it will come with a driver to enable your computer to recognise [recognize, if you're one of my American cousins] the scanner and use it to it's abilities. There are many different image manipulation programmes that you can download freely that will enable you to save your files as .jpg. In fact, if you're using Windows as your Operating System, it comes with a basic image editing programme called Paint. There are many others. I've put a link where you can download IrfanView below.
