How to download pictures from a kodak digital camera?

my computer brain doesnt have a slot where you can put the memory chip from the camera to download the pictures on the computer. i have this plug that connects from the digital camera to the computer but somehow it doesnt work! do you guys know how i can download pics without the memory chip? thankyou!
