I have a generic one i bought a few years ago - still works. On the front it has slots for the many types of memory cards - you slide the card into the proper slot for its size ( it will only go into one slot and only the right way). Then a folder pops up with the contents of the card. On the inside it is connected to an internal USB port off the montherboarad. I paid about $20.00 back then, figure about $15.00 today. I am using WindowsXP on a PIV system I built some time ago...back when this was bought .. abt 2003.

Brands won't matter at all. Cheap readers might lead to data corruption but I've never experienced it myself. I'm pretty sure you can find cheap ones on ebay or dealextreme.com but be prepared to wait a bit for the shipping. Good luck!

Most internal and external readers have slots for nearly ALL current memory cards sold in the market place today. With micro cards they sometimes come with an adapter SD to micro Adapter as they are so small to poke into the whole in the reader. external reader. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FL-003-AK Internal reader http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FL-002-AK Micro card with adapter to slot into reader. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FL-032-KS
