How to recover corrupted word document?

How can I recover a word document?

  • I went to save a MS Word document (grad school final) today on a USB drive and it said "file read error, attempting to recover" and lost the document. It showed up as a wordpad icon but it's full of symbols, now words. Is there anyway to recover this so it's readable? I worked for hours on this thing and saved often. I have no idea what happened and it will take me at least 5 hours to re- do it. Help!

If i am right, you probably had some compatibility problems with the two MSW. If you save the document(originally) as MSW 07, then put it in your USB and put that USB in a different computer with an MSW lower than 07, then the computer with MSW lower than 07 can't read the file because it does not recognize MSW 07 document. you can fix this by going onto the original file, open up word, click on file, click on "save as" and then change the document type into either "word document" or Microsoft word ?- ?.
