What is "local ISP SMTP mail server?

Can I set up a mail server at home to scan with a C5510MFP OKI printer/scanner/copier?

  • The printer is a network printer and I only have a peer to peer LAN at home. I am not technical. OKI say I cannot do it unless I have my own mail server (and I also need to setup user id and password on my PC)? What does it mean to have a mail server? Is it just a piece of software redirecting my mail to a different SMTP address other than my ISP's SMTP? I understand that I can plug the PC in via USB and set up paper port but I thought it would be easy to scan to an email address. Thanks in advance.

  • Answer:

So, you need to scan documents directly to an e-mail? Yes, that is possible... You just need a program like Microsoft outlook, or outlook express to be your e-mail client. And if your Oki all in one has a scan button on the machine, you should be able to program that button to scan directly to an e-mail. The downfall is that you still need to press the "send" button on your computer.. along with the address of who you are sending it to. SMTP is the sending of e-mail to someone from your computer using outlook. Yahoo's is smtp.yahoo.mail.com Yahoo will only allow you to use outlook if you pay their $20 annual fee. I believe google has that service for free.
