Whats the best printer for me at home?

Whats the best at home printer and scanner that uses affordable ink.?

  • please tell me the model name of the printer. if you can can you make sure its hp or lexmark because staples pays you for those cartiges when you give it to them for recycling

  • Answer:

I just bought an EPSON CX8400. It prints great, but is so noisy you can hear it all through the house. It uses waaaaay too much ink. I printed 19 pages and ran out. When one color runs out the printer shuts down and you can't print until you replace the tank. When the tank shows empty, it is still 1/4 full. I've had it for two weeks and replaced cartridges twice. I spent more for the ink than I paid for the printer. IT'S GOING IN THE GARBAGE.

As someone who was in the computer hardware business for years (though I rarely sold printers since I couldn't compete with the crazy rebates) I have always recommended Epson. The print quality is excellent, even on plain paper. I have photos I printed on a 640 about ten years ago on plain paper hanging in my office which still look good, though not as good as the ones from the CX8400 on glossy paper. The warranty is excellent. For a year, Epson will express-ship a replacement and pick up the old one. I had one customer who needed this. He called one afternoon and had the replacement two days later. Another client bought a Canon. It needed two repairs within a few months. Each time it was taken to the repair center, then picked up a few days later. This client runs a specialty printing business and this really hurt. They have since bought an Epson CX5000 and have had no down time since. All name brand ink is expensive, but you can get cheap new replacement cartridges for Epson (not refills which I never recommend) for under $5 at http://ccs-digital.com/ink.asp The CX8400 scanner/copier/printer was on sale at circuitcity.com for $60 with free shipping. If you want to spend a little more for higher photo quality, look at the R280, R380 and RX595. They use 5 colors plus black where the 8400 uses 3. They also print on DVDs. You can also get cheap cartridges for them at the same place.
