Can I force windows to only allow specific programs to print to certain printers?
-
We have some casher drawers here at my job and they are recognized as a printer to the PC. When you want the drawer opened you basically print to it (wierd I know but they had this equipment here when I got here) The problem is that they dont want the user to just be able to print with internet explorer or Word and open up the drawer for obvious reasons. I can set the permissions to the printer for specific users but then whoever is logged in would not be able to use the MS access application that we use here to open the drawer either. Is there a way to restrict a printer based on program and not username? Right now my only idea is to remove any program from the PC that prints like IE, word, ect. Does anybody have any other suggestions? I would greatly prefer NOT to have to install any 3rd party applications to do this. Thanks

Answer:
This might not work but is worth a try. You could try installing a second printer and making that the default printer. (Just the software not the printer) Then ensure all your applications except the drawer opening one print to the "phantom" printer. I would assume that your cash drawer would still default to your "drawer opener" as it probably loads a set of presets (In the same way that if you set a document to print to one printer it will always print that document to the same printer even if it is not default). As I say - might not work - but its worth a try - good luck!!
