What is a printer spooler?

What is printer spooler service?

  • We had a printer installed, now it has disappeared from our computer, when we try to re-install, we are told the printer spooler service is not running. How do we fix this? (we have XP)

  • Answer:

Print Spooler is a service listed in services.msc (access it via Start > Run.. > services.msc) that by default is set to "Automatic" for the Startup Type column. Personally, I turn it to manual but that's just a preference. You can change the setting by double clicking it. Use caution in Services.msc though, as changing an option that you are unsure of can cause your computer to stop booting or other severe problems. You can also google any of those services and usually find out more as to what they are in detail. It's description is: Loads files to memory for later printing. Hope this helps.
