Why doesn't a computer recognise a printer?

Hi I had a problem with a computer virus and malware etc and now windows XP will not recognise my printer?

  • I have throroughly cleaned my system but I fear either the virus damaged, or I accidently deleted in the process or getting rid of the virus, whatever part of windows it is that recognises my printer - I have tried re-installing the software, drivers etc and even tried a different printer. I don't have the windows startup disk as it came ready installed. There were other errors with the machine but I have been gradually working my way through them - this one has got me stumped though - is there a download or something that can fix windows xp errors like this?

Hi! Katy, I think what Jeff is asking you to do is: Start/ Run/ type SFC /scannow this will need you to have your windows XP CD already install in your optical drive it will get drivers and whatever it need from there. Do not run the CD just insert it and let SFC /scannow do it for you. I think you might have install the software for the printer wrong you should uninstall it start/control panel/add remove a program. re-start your system and install it again. I know its not a virus or malware you probably deleted the printers driver. Please post all the other problems the printer is giving you.

If you can’t find the right Windows XP drivers manually I would recommend just getting a software program that can do it for you. There is a program I use which will find drivers for just about all hardware devices. The best part is it takes a snapshot of your system specifications and matches the right driver to go with it. Perform a free driver scan at: http://www.best-driver-updater.com/ Also, you can get the driver from the official site: http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en

Sounds like something screwed with your system files. Go to the start menu, and to run, type in SFC and hit enter, let it scan, and reply back with what happened.

Jeff

go to the boot menu and then restore your computer. it might help.
