Where did my printer icon on contacts go?

I installed this printer (HP Officejet 5610 All in one ) usin windows vista cd when the comp is windows 7?

  • and i installed everything but when i went to Microsoft word and try to print something out the printer wont work, nothing happens... i go to hardware and sound devices and printers.. and below where it said printer and faxes it has Fax and other icon that said Microsoft XPS Document writer and the second icon has a green check mark in the corner of it.. but when i want to print something out nothing happen. help? im tryin to get a usb cord for it ( which i dont have in this house for that printer ) but do i need to buy a completely new printer? i dont think my mother in law would like me to tell her that i cant use her printer ( which is new and never been open ) but i bought a new and updated comp... help? ( if you can.. )

    If you don't have a USB cord to hook it up to your computer, then it won't work no matter what you do. Get a standard USB cable first. Download the correct printer driver for the printer for Windows 7 here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=4062&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=441125 Install the software first, then power on the printer then connect the USB cable to the printer and computer and set it up. The LPT1 port is not the right port to use, but the setup will walk you through selecting the USB port or set it up automatically. Make sure to set it as your Default printer when asked.
