Why won't my wireless printer work?

Why wont old printer wont work with my new computer?

  • I just got new dell XPS 420. Upon trying to connect my old HP LaserJet 5(M) printer to my computer I realized there was no slot on the back for the cord to go in, so I bought a cord, one side USB, one side to go into the back of the printer, for 45 bucks. I have windows vista premium. I followed the steps I usually would to add a printer. When I turn it on it says ready, but when I attempt a test page it says error under the icon of the printer on my computer Could anyone a) walk me through the steps to make sure I'm doing it right b) tell me what could be wrong

  • Answer:

I don't believe that the Laserjet 5M has Vista drivers. You bought the correct cable, now it is a matter of finding compatible drivers (if available). Here is the information from HP's website: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&docname=c00811676 It looks like the drivers are part of Vista, but you have to use the PCL5 drivers. Check the following: 1. Go into Start (globe) | Control Panel | Printers. Make sure to delete any printers listed here (if you are wanting to start over). 2. Click on Add New Printer. Choose local printer. Make sure to choose USB as the port and click Next. Manufacturers: HP Model: Look for LaserJet 5M, if it isn't listed there, then choose the PCL5 driver and click next. This should install the drivers. --Will watch for additional details and will update then.

According to HP, the drivers should be included with the computer (Windows Vista should have them preinstalled). So that shouldn't be a problem. I'd try the troubleshooting for your model on the HP support website. http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SupportTaskIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&taskId=110&prodSeriesId=25479&prodTypeId=18972&supportTaskId=22994 Hope this helps!

You may need a new driver, you should be able to download it off the printers website.

lilcolatarci

either not compatible with Vista or you need a Vista driver for it.

probably another compatibility issue with the vista OS.
