  • Answer:

I too have 2 new DELL Notebook PCs that no longer have parallel ports. Fortuntaely one came with a DELL DOCKING STATION that has a parallel port but the other I bought a BELKIN USB to Parallel adapter. It worked fine at first but later I had trouble and even DELL TECHNICAL SUPPORT was clueless. Here are some tips worth trying: (i) sometimes for some unexplained reason, not all USB ports are EQUAL and some don't not recognize the device (believe me) you have to make note for all future reference; (ii) sorry I am at work but BELKIN TECHNICAL SUPPORT gave me a full page of step by step instructions on making their USB to Parallel Cable work that if my memory is good starts with: Open CONTROL PANEL, GO TO SYSTEMS and check to make sure no YELLOW EXCLAMATION MARKS on USB DEVICES. Next Open your applicable PRINTER, go down to PROPERTIES, 3rd column or so from left is entitled "PORTS" and make sure CHECK MARK on applicable USB... Sorry I have to stop here for now bec I'm at work and my HP Laserjet is set up for parallel and I do not have the USB settings in front of me which hopefully I can remember to edit this Yahoo Answer when I get home. Best of Luck and Hope the Above Helps!

hmmm good question. Well you can set up file and print sharing on your computer, I'm assuming you have XP or Vista. once you set upi file and print sharing you need to set up sharing for your printer. after that just do "NET USE LPT1: \\[Computer Name]\Printer /PERSISTENT:YES" That should work. It maps a virtual parallel port to your shared printer and your dot matrix printer will send info to LPT1. You may need to play with the drivers for the applications to understand the printer format.
