Where did my printer icon on contacts go?

Can I print wirelessly from my Dell laptop to my HP printer?

  • I've already searched for this answer and nobody has answered it. For a little background info, I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 running Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit (this is the only computer I own). My printer is a HP Deskjet 6988. I have health issues and normally I have my laptop hooked straight up to my printer with a usb cable at my desk, but many times I still need to be on the computer but it's too painful to sit in my chair anymore, so I disconnect my internet (dial-up), unhook everything (printer, scanner, speakers, etc.), bring my laptop to my bed and re-hook up the phone line and power cord in a place closer to my bed (about 10ft away) and continue working. The only problem is once I move the laptop to my bed, I can't print anything if I need to (except to unhook everything again and bringing everything back to my desk). I researched this a little while back and someone told me to buy a "Printer and PC Adapter with Bluetooth Wireless Technology" (HP BT450), so I did. I put the disk in and installed the program, plugged the usb stick thing that came with it into the front of my printer like the directions say ("just plug in and you're ready to go"--not!), and the blue light just flashes fast and that's about all it does. I've gone into my settings for my printer and made it shareable, tried getting the printers bluetooth area to find my computer/printer through bluetooth, gone into the control panel and clicked on the bluetooth icon and tried to get it to recognized any bluetooths available and it's never worked no matter what I tried--money wasted. So now, what can I do, aside from buying another computer and doing some kind of expensive large complicated network thing that I've seen so many talking about (which I can't afford to do). Has anybody/company come out with a way for a single laptop user to simply print to their desktop printers wirelessly? I hope someone out there has got the answer for me. You don't know what it would mean to me if you could come up with the answer for my issue. If there is no solution to this problem, I would even appreciate someone telling me the cheapest setup I would need in order to be able to print from my laptop in my bed to my printer at my desk. Thanks in advance for any help.

Short answer - Yes Longer answer - If I may be blunt - The amount of (way to much) information you have provided leads me to think you are never going to solve your problem either here (yahoo) or using a help line. Sometimes trying to connect devices that should work can just drive you insane. Consider paying for a mobile computer technician to come out and get it going for you. Good luck :)

According to the HP website, the printer you have is both wired and wireless network capable out of the box. The bluetooth thing was a wrong steer and you should give up on that as it's only for very short range (10ft.) use. If your internet router is on your desk then the simplest thing to do is to connect a cable between one of the four ports on the back of the router and the identical port on the printer. This is a 'straight Ethernet cable' and will cost you around a fiver from a decent computer shop or around £15 from PC World. This then gives you a printer connected to your network that you can print to remotely. If your internet router isn't on your desk then you need to connect the printer to your network wirelessly. There's a menu option on the printer to allow you to choose your wireless network and to enter the network password (also called WEP/WPS/TKIP key). This will establish a wireless link between the printer and your internet router, again giving you a printer connected to your network that you can print to remotely. Some HP printers came with a utility program on the CD that helps you do this and to get it to work you need to do a once-only setup with the USB connection in place. In either case, to do that though, you'll need to add a new printer to your laptop. In Control Panel, Printers, add a printer and follow the prompts for adding a network printer. The printer should just show up in the list that comes up and then you're off. If this doesn't go as smoothly as I've suggested here then get your original CD that came with the printer and there's an installation wizard there that will step you through it. The other features of the printer (scanning, memory card slots) aren't available over the network connection.
