Can laser printer cartridge be refilled?

Regarding Home Printer - It won't print RED on a fully refilled color ink cartridge. Possible diagnosis?

  • I've had the ink cartridge professionally refilled at Walgreen's twice. Still it won't print Red. I get a little brown but even that fades to yellow in a print of red lettering on just 1 page. Walgreens did a test of the ink cartridge on their computerized ink refill station which looks like a sophisticated piece of big equipment. They claim the cartridge works, prints all colors, and is full. But the technician may be mistaken. I don't know. I see the potential problem coming from one of several sources: A. Walgreen's equipment isn't refilling my cartridge with sufficient red ink. B. There is something wrong with my color ink cartridge such that I need to buy a new one. C. Something is wrong with my printer hardware such that it needs to be cleaned or repaired. D. Something is wrong with the software driving my printer such that it needs to be reclibrated or reset. The printer is HP Officejet 5600 / under 1 year old. Your diagnosis & info source?

  • Answer:

Yes, refilling ink cartridges will void your warranty and the printer ink cartridge refills are not made up of the same materials that the original manufacturers inks are. Therefore, they may not work properly and may lead to clogged printheads. All that being said, You need to perform a nozzle check, to see which inks are getting through the printhead. From the nozzle check, go to the printhead cleaning and clean the printhead 2-3 times. Then run another nozzle check, to see if any of the red is getting through. If it is not, your only other resort, short of buying a new ink cartridge is a head alignment. I don't think this is the problem, but it is an option you can try. I would recommend not using Walgreens for your ink cartridge refills. If you MUST refill your ink cartridges, try using Office Max or Office Depot. Also you should never have an ink cartridge refilled more than three times. Why? Because you are using a tri-color ink cartridge that comes with built-in printheads. The printheads were never intended to be used over and over. They are disposable printheads and this is where I think your problem lies.

You need to get a ink cartridge replacement. When they filled you cartridge, they may have overfilled it which caused the the ink colors to mix together and that is why you are not getting true colors. Best bet, just toss it Also, bring it back to Walgreen's and let them know. I have refilled my color cartridges many times with excellent results.

refilling cartridges is a risky business. they are designed not to be refilled. read http://ccs-digital.com/refills.html for more details.

Replacement ink is often not as good a quality as original ink. You will have voided your warenty on your printer by used replacement ink. The problem could be the heads on the printer are clogged because of the rubbish ink you have filled it with, if this is the case you will have a costly replacement. Try an original HP ink to see if that prints red .... if so its your replacment ink. if not you have screwed up your printer heads
