  The Canon printers which use the PGBK-5 black cartridge and the CLI-8 series color cartridges are the cheapes per page, the cartridges are expensive outright (20 dollars per, which adds to 80 or 100 dollars for a full set depending on the model) but are so large in capacity they work out to being incredibly cheap per page so they are the best as long as you will be using the machine on a fairly regular basis (the printhead is seperated from the cartridge which means that if the printer isnt used for multiple months it will become clogged and be an expensive part to replace) also the cartridges are readily available at all major office supply stores like staples and will be for many years after the printers that use them are discontinued. if you will be leaving the printer for months on end without use, you might find an HP printer to be a better choice (other than the ones that use the 02 series inks same deal with the canon printheads) They will cost you more per page, but this may only cost you a few dollars per year more and you wont have to worry about the leaving it unused for multiple months because the printhead is attached to the cartridge,so worstcase scenario you buy new cartridges. All that said Canons are incredible quality and are much cheaper on ink, so if you find a model which uses the inks listed above, you will be very satisfied.
