Do you need to use photo ink for matte photo paper?

The photo cartridge I've got (that came with my printer) doesn't seem to want to work, so can I use regular ink on matte paper with good results?

Answer:
Yes though results may differ than if you used photo ink. Be sure to specify you'll be printing on matte paper in Windows.
