How can i password protect my printer?
-
I work in a classroom with thirty one computers. One is my personal computer that i have all my printers installed on. One is for my assistants. I have a black laser, color laser, hp design jet plotter, and a Toshiba color copier. I need the design jet and the color copier to have a password on them for my assistants because other students have to be able to use this computer also. I would like to do it with out any soft ware, but if i have to the technology budget is almost empty so free would be best. Also we use novel iprint on all of our printers this shouldn't affect any software suggestions.

Answer:
You can set user permissions for the printers over the network, but trying to limit local logins is very difficult, I have never found a successful method.

Block all incoming open IP's or Ports. Damn, this is going to be hard to explain, but you can block access by configuring your network. Firewire ports help if you know how to deny access to the protocals. for example 2wire lets you type in homeportal in the URL without the (http) or (www) and lets you access the whole entire network and you can monitor who is using your network, therefor you can block them or stop all incoming open Ip's From there you can also create a password protect for printer networking, where one password gives everyone access to print.
you need to do it through ur pc

I think the easiest way will be to create a user profile for the assistant that is different than the students. When the assistant is logged in, they will have access to the printers. If you are using XP, the printer will only show in the profile you install the printer to. Also, remove the "auto" recognized network printers in the Printers and Faxes folder to keep the student from trying to use them.
