Setting up a printer to my mac?

Setting up a network so I can print from my Mac to my PC connected printer?

So I bought a MacBook Pro but I have a PC (desktop) and it is connected to my printer. I was actually able to somehow connect my Mac to my printer so I am able to print but the problem is I can only print when my PC is turned on. Is there some other way to connect my Mac to my printer wirelessly without the need of having to keep my PC turned on? Should I set up a network, and if I have to how do I do this?
Answer:

It would be helpful to know what make and model the printer is. Assuming the printer is compatible with the Mac, the Mac would first need a print driver installed that would be compatible with the Mac OS. This would be done with the PC turned off.
