How do i get rid of a second icon?

I have a taskbar icon that wasn't there before. It says "Looking for Printers." How can I get rid of it?

  • This icon was never there before. I am worried that it is taking up a small amount of memory or network bandwith. Probably not a big deal, but I would like to know what it is and how to get rid of it. Of note, I did have an HP LaserJet printer hooked up directly to this laptop a few months ago. I no longer use that setup though and thought I had uninstalled the HP drivers. I now use a network printer. Running XP on a HP laptop.

  • Answer:

If you have the HP icon in the system tray then you haven't fully deleted the HP printer software. Go to program files and delete all the HP printer related directories you find there. The go to your reg and do the same. You may have to shut off any hp services that are already running via Task Mngr to do this. Lastly, check your start up items to make sure there are no HP printer items there either.
