What's the difference between laser jet printer and ink jet printer?

Ink Jet or Laser Printer for home offie?

  • I work from home and do alot of printing, mostly stuff that I read and throw away. I currently use an Ink Jet but the ink costs are ridiculous! I am thinking of buying a laser printer, but is it worth it? If so, any recommendations on brand, model, etc?

You are looking at the wrong solution. Lot's of people make that mistake. They simply buy what's cheap. But the printer is not the expensive part, the INK is. For high volume printing, you should buy a laser printer. While the cartridge seems expensive, they often print over 3,000 sheets, instead of 200. Buy YES, you would use a cheaper black only laser printer. I would buy a mid-range priced HP laser printer. (not the cheapest). But if you want low cost inkjet, then buy Canon. Visit Staples and LOOK. The color prints from separate cartridges, so you don't throw away good ink when one color runs out. For high volume, the Canon has a large capacity black cartridge. Look for the model that takes 5 seperate cartridges. Staples is a very reputable dealer. They have a 14 day NO HASSLE return policy. That means that they support you, and not their vendors. They don't want you to be disappointed, so they don't sell CRAP. Use the EASY BUTTON. Good luck and Happy Computing!

Look, Laser Printers are better. But they use more electricity, yes they do. The way they work is pretty simple: friction. Electricity puts the laser ink on the paper. It does help print a lot faster, yes. But some have the first page out speed, so check that for your needs, too. I would recommend HP (Hewlett Packard). They have the best line of computer products so far at reasonable prices. Their laser printers aren't even expensive, so go to www.hp.com and check them out. Good luck and Happy New Year!

I recommend reading Cnet's article on "What kind of printer is right for me article" linked below. I recommend buying the printer with the cheapest toner.

The prices for cartridges on laser printers are just as equally ridiculous. The cartridges for the laser printer where I work cost $110.

Laser cartridges run $75 each with four in the printer, but they last for 3000 pages. Figure your cost effectiveness. I love my HP Laserjet color 2840 all-in-one and support is superb.

Inkjets these days are quite good. I own A HP G85 (had it for a few years now) and it prints great photo's etc... Laser or Inkjet each will have their own costly quirks pick the one you can put up with the best is my advice.
