Inkjet vs. laser?
-
I bought a laser printer (KM 2400W) at a good deal, and my inkjet died soon thereafter. Now all I have is the laser. It seems that lasers don't support a lot of alternative media like photo papers and labels. I can't find label sheets that I can use in laser printer, and there are only glossy papers for photos. Some people tell me to use the inkjet papers, but I know the laser is hot and runs the risk of papers sticking to the drum. A good deal won't be so good if I tear up the drum and have to buy a new one. Should I just try some in the laser, or buy a cheap (<$100?) inkjet for labels and pictures. Big, long explanations would be appreciated by an old, computer illiterate guy. I'm looking for a solution where I can just go to Staples and buy papers off the rack. I don't want to troll the internet to find some off-brand, specialty papers. I'm sure somebody makes papers that will work in my printer, but I'd rather buy an inkjet than search through arcane websites for hours.

You can in fact use your laser printer to print labels. In fact this is how all the companies I've worked for/with have printed their labels. All you need is the Avery style labels (paper labels with an adhesive backing on a light plastic sheet). Just make sure that the labels come on 8.5" by 11" sheets so they will feed just like your regular paper. The most important thing is to make sure the labels aren't crinkled, and that you never run a single sheet through the printer more than once. Otherwise, you'll almost always peel a label or two on to the innards of your printer. Also, it is a good idea to feed the labels through the manual feed on the printer instead of using the paper tray. The reason for this is that every time you run the label page around an edge it increases the chances of one coming off.

Office Depot sells glossy laser paper, 100 sheets for about $15 & Staples should have it also. This will give you execelent photo quality. Lables look at Avery while your there, you may need software for them to print, but shouldn't be a big deal. My MS Outlook has printer set-ups for Avery and other lables. Hope it helps. PS This is a good color printer even at retail so if you got a deal enjoy it.

Unless your doing a large volume of printing, ink jets are the way to go for labels. For one thing you will always have a wider variety of label types available for ink-jets because of the heat in the lasers, as you had pointed out. However if you need to print 500 pages of labels, ink-jets will be a lot slower and you will basically have to babysit it the whole time. Another great feature of low end ink-jets is that you don't have to deal with maintenance on them, when they start to need maintenance toss and buy a new one. Probably by the next time you need a new printer, you will see a good choice in sub $100 lasers, as strange as this may sound, the low end lasers are not far from there now.
