Are genuine HP ink cartridges required for the HP 2800 Inkjet printer?
-
I bought this printer and some compatible ink cartridges - which are literally 1/10 of the cost of genuine cartridges. I have always bought compatible cartidges in the past and never had an issue. I connected the printer and put the compatibles in, there is an error message saying please install part number C4810, C4811, C4812 & C4813. I checked online and learned that these part numbers are for the HP brand cartridges. the compatible cartridge part numbers i have are C4838A, C4836A, C4837A & C4844A. They fit no probs, but do not seem to work.

Answer:
no they are not required, but are the recommended option. If the carts are not working then your issue is simply that the printer has the technology to detect compatible cartridges and will not run with them. Try looking for a fix I had a quick look but did not find one, a bit more in depth search may reveal a sneaky fix with insulation tape on part of the sensor (- works for other models!) Or try unloading the HP software, and just install the drivers only and it may bypass the software that gives the error message.

in the past I have tried a few compatible cartridges for my HP (not 2800) They have either not been recognised, ran out very early or simply failed to work. I now refill the empties myself and buy a new one only if I have a quality print run. I suspect in this case as the numbers are different you have been sold the wrong cartridges. perhaps the seller didn't know what the numbers meant, As far as I know remanufactured or refilled should work, but HP like Epson have patented features in the carts and other manufacturers probably can't quite match them

In modern printers genuine cartridges have a micro chip that tells the printer how much ink is in the cartridge. A secondary effect of this is to ensure that you have to use the genuine article! Printer manufacturers make next to nothing selling printers - thay make their money on the ink. Ever noticed that a new printer (with cartridges!) is only $50 or so more than a full set of cartridges?

I looked up the cartridges for your printer, For your model printer there appears to be 2 types of cartridges- with the heads and without the heads. The ones you bought are without the heads and the printer needs the ones with the heads.

You should buy only the original cartridge from authorized dealers. Any other printer ink cartridges will only damage your unit.

Yeah, a lot of inkjet printers check to make sure you're using official cartridges rather than imitations.
