A question about Epson printer ink?

  • I have an Epson R285 printer that takes 6 ink cartridges and also prints CDs. I have set the CD writing to print in black yet the other colours are going down as well. I can't understand why this is and is obviously frustrating because the CDs are only coming out with black writing on it. Would appreciate if anyone out there has has the same experience and can shed some light on it for me.

    The ones who said the printer uses colour and black to print black are correct. Printers mix all the colours to obtain a sharp black. Its just one of those things that printers do.

Well surprisingly enough there are many shades of black. The black cartridge is just one shade of black which is used for printing documents, black on white. [or what ever colour paper you put in the printer!] When you are doing graphic printing as I said there are many shades of black. These blacks are made by the colour cartridges and not the black cartridge. In fact the black cartridge not even used in that kind of printing. That's why the colour cartridges go down.

Your printer doesn't use a true black. It does underlay all 5 colours to darken and sharpen the black. There is no way around this. Most newer printers do this.

When you press print, a box appears next, go into "Printing Preferences " just to make sure of the settings. Select the type of quality print you require. That should do the trick !

Could you possibly have the printer set just to print in mono/black? Check your printer settings screen to see if it it set to print full colour. The coloured ink could be getting used up if set on grayscale possibly? Good luck.
