How / if can I check how much ink is in my HP Printer cartridge in-between 'empties'?

I have a bag from OfficeMax that offers "everything I can stuff in it for 20% off." This offer lasts only during the week of January 08->January 14. I use SO MUCH BLACK INK with my HP Deskjet printer that I have to buy more of the refill cartridges than I can afford! I have very-recently (I recall, just before Christmas) shelled-out the ridiculous amount for another refill cartridge. I am not sure if I already need another cartridge. How / if can I check the amount of ink in the cartridge of my HP Deskjet D1660 printer without having to remove, disconnect, and re-start my system (the common Windows startup procedure)? I use Windows VISTA. Thanks for Tech-help.

if you install the full printer software, whenever you print a page, it tells you a status of your inks from the Taskbar.
