What would happened if I plug Hp Lazar-Jet Printer (Model No 1020) through UPS?

  • I am having an Hp Lazar-Jet Printer (Model No 1020) in my office. Once a time I plug the printer through the UPS. In the mean time the IT Manager of my office visit to our section for verification of the system. He saw me plugging the printed and say not to plug it like this way. From that time I am having a question in my mind that (What would happened if I plug Hp Lazar-Jet Printer (Model No 1020) through UPS? ).

  • Answer:

UPS batteries (most common, like APC ES series) are rated for 20 minutes power supply for CRT monitor+desktop computer (approx 300watts), a HP LASER-jet printer during its active period consumes ~ 250 watts. Until & unless mentioned such UPS can't supply 550 watts from battery power during power cuts. Only some high output UPS with large battery bank will support printers. Anyhow, if you look at UPS plug panel, you will find some plug points mentioned as surge protector, you can plug you printer or scanners in those sockets. they will protect your device from line surges (voltage fluctuations), they don't run on UPS batteries and will get no power during power down. (Surge protectors can support another 500 watts along with cpu and monitor running on UPS)
