How to reinstall printer driver?

Windows XP having trouble installing driver for HP Laser Jet 1020 printer. How can I fix this?

  • I am trying to install the driver for my HP Laser Jet 1020 printer to my Windows XP. I went to the Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus controllers > HP LaserJet 1020. I tried to reinstall the driver. The Hardware Update Wizard gave me this message. "An error occurred during the installation of the device: The driver installation file for this device is missing a necessary entry. This may be because the INF was written for Windows 95 or later. Contact your hardware vendor." I'm trying to install the driver and connect my printer to my computer. Can someone please give me detailed instructions. Thank you.

  • Answer:

You shouldn't have to go to device manager at all! Unplug the printer, restart the PC. Insert the printer driver CD/DVD (if you don't have it, go here and download the drivers for installation.. ). Install the drivers and connect the printer when prompted or when the installer has finished, restart☺

Do you still have the CD that came with the Printer? If you do then follow these steps. Turn off the printer. Disconnect the printer from the computer. On the computer go to the Control Panel and click on Printers. Select the printers that are listed there and delete them. Put in the CD that came with the printer. (NO NOT connect the printer to the computer) Follow the instructions from the CD. About four steps in you will be told to connect the printer and turn it on.. If you don't have the CD. Google for the driver and download it and install it after removing the printers from control panel > printers.

you shouldn't need to do anyting w/ the usb controller, you need to re-install the printer driver in the printers menu. if the driver isn't there you will either need to visit the hpo site or use the windows online update/drivers.... feel free to email for more info if this doesn't help.

When I got XP - I found that my rather new HP printer was not supported so I could not download the drivers - don't know if that is your issue but sometimes the reasons are so obvious that we don't think of them first.

if that still not work, try to update the printer driver to the newest version.

Catty

Try downloading the latest driver directly from HP.
