Shared printer problem?

How to Grant Guest Account Access To A Shared Printer between Windows XP and Windows 7?

  • I have 4 computers networked together in a Workgroup (not a Domain), 2 running Windows XP Professional, 1 with Windows 7 Home basic 32 bit and 1 with Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. Each computer has a password-protected Administrator-level account and an activated Guest account. We use the Guest account so that interns and other part-time help are denied access to shared data. My problem is that the Guest account users are not able to "see" the network, and thus are unable to print to a high-speed printer we have hooked up to one of the computers. This only occurs if one is logged in as a Guest. If they are logged in as an Administrator, then they are able to "see" and print to the shared printer. But then they also have access to shared data, which we don't want them to have. Is there a way to grant Guest accounts access to a shared printer on another machine but not letting them have access to shared data on that same machine? Alternatively, is there a way to set up a User-level account so that it is denied access to shared data but has access to a shared printer? I'm guessing that one or more of the Group policies will have to be modified to do this, but haven't been able to figure out which one will do the trick. Any help most appreciated.

  • Answer:

Depending on what machine you have the printer set up on, (XP pro or Windows 7), you should be able to right click on the shared printer and click properties. Then go to the sharing tab and run the shared printer network setup wizard. Then you can assign rights.
