The best laserjet printer?

LaserJet 5M printer wont work?

  • I just bought a dell XPS 420 desktop to replace my old Acer Aspire XPS desktop. My old computer included an old fashioned printer port on the back so I could print my LaserJet 5M in (the printer is like 12 years old). It worked great. My new computer doesnt have the same slot, so we bought a converter from Dynex with a head that printed into my printer on one end and USB on the other. So I plug it in, choose LaserJet 5M from the list of vista compatible printers, add it, and then go to print a test page. The printer sits there, still displaying its `Ready`status, and the test page doesnt print. When I select the printer when I go to print a word document, it has the symbol and name, but under the symbol it says ERROR. I know the printer is compatible with vista and I know I have no drivers to download (because it worked on my old vista desktop) so whats the problem?

Hi Lemmon dont forget that you have to go in the printers menu and make sure that the correct port is chosen and not lpt1 which I think that the problem lies there. Let me know.

Other answers

The integrated drivers you get with vista are terrible. Unhook the printer and download the Vista 5M driver from HP. Install, only hooking the printer back up in the point of installation when instructed to.
