Why is my PC only showing a black screen?

Why is pc screen not working, showing picture? ?

  • For some reason my pc screen is not showing any images. It's a samsung syncmaster 193v and it's getting power and is connected correctly to pc, input has not been touched. The green power light is flashing and test screen works. The pc is a packard bell. Any ideas. Unfortunately I have no other screens or pc inputs to test what's is wrong.

  • Answer:

just because you don't think the input has been touched doe snot mean the cable has not disconnected, unplug at both ends and reconnect to be sure. The best test is plug the monitor into a laptop or another PC to ensure it is not the problem. Obviously if it does not work on another PC you test again but use a different VGA cable. If still no signal it is time to buy a new monitor. The green power light should be constant, so it suggests either the power in to the monitor is wrong (unlikely) or that it is getting an incorrect or possibly no signal at all. Is your VGA device on-board or by an additional card fitted to the mainboard? IF on-board ideally you need to check with an additional card to be sure it is not the VGA chip that has failed. If an additional card already then initially remove it from the slot on the mainboard (PC off of course) and simply re-seat it again, sometimes they just manage to work themselves loose. If not joy then either put the card in an alternative PC, or fit a new card to the machine. If it is a powered card (from the PSU) there is a remote chance the 12v rail has failed on the PSU but this often means the PC does not boot at all either, though if you have a good PSU it most likely has at least 2 12v rails. If not confident about testing any of this all you can do is take it to technician and get them to test it for you.

I wonder what type of connection you're using? If your monitor has VGA and HDMI connections, then if you're using an HDMI connection for the first time, you'll HAVE to change the input to HDMI rather than analog. Other than that... it is possible the frequency is set too high or low for the monitor which would be difficult to fix without another monitor. Sounds like it's stuck in sleep mode though... I've had that happen before with one of my monitors. Maybe try powering the whole system off for a while, then starting it up again.

if you have another pc - try that on the screen - if it works okay, then I would say the graphics card on the first pc is dead and needs replacing!
