Desktop icons rearrange when connecting display?

I am connecting an extra display to my laptop, and when ever i attach it the desktop icons on the far right side of my screen shift over a bit to the left, why is this ? unless of course i disable align to grid, or unplug the cable.

Answer:
It's probably due to the external monitor's display properties being set to a lower resolution than what your laptop screen is set to and the computer is compensating for the different resolution and moving the icons over slightly so they fit on the screen and can be used given their location. You'd have to use a higher display resolution to avoid that problem when using the external monitor.
