Cannot connect laptop to external monitor?

Broken laptop screen won't connect to external monitor?

  • My little brother accidently broke my laptop screen by falling on it. Ther are cracks on the screen when i boot it up and the backlight still turns on. I tried connecting it to an external monitor and it wont work. I also tried using the Fn+F8, etc to connect to the external monitor as well. But there is no signal still. If i replace my screen, would my problem be solved? Or could there be more damage to the laptop that i do not know about?

  • Answer:

Connect the monitor, flat panel, or projector to the laptop's 15-pin video connection on the back of the computer. Once connected, your laptop may automatically switch to the new external display or you may be required to press a sequence of keys in order to switch from the laptop to the external display. The key sequence can vary depending on laptop, however is often either: Fn + F3, F4, F5, F8, or F9. This means if you were for example to press and hold Fn + F3 at the same time it'd switch between your laptop display to your external display. The function key will often be labeled as CRT/LCD or have a picture of a monitor on the key or close to the key. Unfortunately, the keys pressed to switch displays is dependent on the model and manufacturer of the laptop. If none of the above key sequences work, consult your laptop documentation or consult your laptop manufacturer.

Fn-F8 is a function that cycles through a few settings, probably in the order of LCD-Monitor-LCD/Monitor Clone-LCD/Monitor extended. Fn-F8 once. If it does not work, do it twice, then 3 times, and then 4. When you do multiple times, do not release the FN key and do the F8 in succession. One of them should bring your monitor to live.

Think it's just your screen. Just replace the screen. As for the laptop and the lcd monitor, play with the lcd monitor settings sometimes that works like changing it form digital to analog etc..
