What's the little button on the left side of my Macbook Pro do?

Macbook pro display crashing?

Hi Recently my computer has been freezing with this odd checkered pattern appearing from top right to bottom left. The checkers are small, about the size of the spotlight icon, and cover the screen in diagonal parallel lines. When this happens sound continues to play normally but everything freezes, and the power-button must be held down. Does anyone know whats going on/how to fix this problem. Thanks. i bought this june 2006. so i don't know if the apple repair applies. i dont have apple care. i'm totally screwed Macbook Pro 15" 2 GHz Mac OS X (10.4.11)

Sounds like your video card is on the fritz. I would bring it to an Apple store and take to a Genius to get a price on out of warranty repair. There was an issue with the video cards on some of the last gen models.
