How do I connect my projector to my laptop?

How do I connect my HDMI laptop to a VGA projector?

  • I'm a teacher and just bought a new Acer ICONIA W500-BZ467 for using in classrooms that do not have a smart board. The problem is that the classrooms that I teach in have only VGA for projector input, and this laptop has only HDMI output. Now, I've done my research and am aware that one is digital and the other is analog, and I've looked over some old questions. I know that you can't just get a simple cable. Most of the converter boxes that I find are extremely expensive or convert the wrong direction. I've seen the option for using USB to VGA, but those are rather expensive too and I have no idea how well that would work. Does anybody know more about these sorts of conversions and/or can find a link to something that will do the job correctly for no more than about $20? Thanks!
