I want a media player that will allow me to watch DVD's in HD on my HD T.V.?
-
My HD T.V. is a Polaroid 40 in. HD t.v. (720 or 1080 i). I have a DVD player hooked up to it with YPbPr connects (the DVD player doesn't have HDMI). But it says it plays DVD's at 480i (not HD--720 or 1080). My PC is also hooked up to it with VGA connector (resolution is on max at 1280x1024--not sure why, since t.v.'s max resolution is like 1300xsomething and video card is much higher). My gfx card is a NVIDIA 8800 GTS, Sony Optiarc DVD-R/RW and ROM. I know that I can't watch HD DVDs in TRUE HD without an HD player, but can't I watch them at an HD resolution? Currently, I'm using "VideoLAN" to watch DVDs, but it doesn't look HD when I use it to watch DVDs. Windows Media Player 11 (or previous versions) is out of the question because I can't seem to get it to play sound. What media player can I use to watch dvds in High Deff?

Answer:
DVDs do not contain HD content. You need the player to perform HDTV 'upconversion'. So while the source program is standard definition, the player interpolates the missing dots. It works well. I have a MythTV system (A PC, Linux, MythTV software,Nvidia 6200 graphics card) that I'm watching a DVD on right now at 720p through my HDTV. No problems. To pursuade the PC to drive a 720p signal, you need to tell the graphics card to drive 1280x720 with the HDTV Timing (that is 720p). In Linux, the following modeline in xorg.conf works. I can't help with Windows, you're stuck with the dialog boxes your graphics card offers. ModeLine "720p" 74.2 1280 1320 1376 1650 720 722 728 750 VGA, DVI, HDMI or YpbPr are all fine to carry HDTV resolutions. Since your 8800 has a DVI output, it is carrying HDMI signals, you just need the converter dongle ($20 ish). Or you can get a video cable with DVI on the computer end and HDMI on the TV end. That's what I use. I got it from Frys. CyberLink PowerDVD and Intervideo WinDVD are windows programs that probably do what you want. To reiterate.. First get your PC to drive 720p (1280x720) HDTV timings Second install a DVD player that will do fullscreen. Third, if you want a redudant step with less spaghetti, get a DVI to HDMI cable. Or install Linux and MythTV.

DVDs are not recorded in high def. It can be upconverted to high def with an upconverting DVD player through the HDMI cable.
