Don't sit to close to the tv it will hurt your eyes but why can we sit directly next to a computer monitor?
-
I want to know the reasoning if any behind the old motto don't sit to close to the television or you'll hurt your eyes. Ok so everyones heard that before... my question is why is it ok to sit in front of a computer monitor all day long. If you think about it we sit much closer to a computer monitor and a lot of us work behind a computer 8 hours a day. Can someone explain to me why its ok to sit in front of a computer monitor for god knows how long and no one ever says don't sit in front of your computer monitor to long or you'll hurt your eyes. Could it be that since computer monitors are still a new concept and like 30 years down the Rd. we'll all be blind lol or is there an actual reason that sitting in front of a computer monitor is healthier for your eyes then a much more distant television. Thanks in advance, Kyle

Answer:
No. Sitting in front of a TV is probably better than sitting in front of a monitor, probably because people tend to sit closer to a monitor, and their eyes would be more exposed to ionized dust from the monitor (also due to distance). It's still unhealthy to sit in front of anything like that, because it causes eye strain, tiredness etc.

Think about what TV's do. Constant motion and that is what puts strain on your eyes the most, If your a gamer and you play FPS you know what I'm talking about. With TV's its always changing and with computers it is usually constant and you also anticipate motion, which is also a factor.

It's still not good to sit next to a computer for long! Also, it's not good before you go to sleep! It's not as much of an issue with LCD displays. It was mainly with the CRT displays. I think it was all the radiation coming out of the screens wasn't really good for you!

I would say its because if your watching TV the screen is constantly flashing' changing back and forth brite' then dark. i can see how that could affect your eye's. A computer don't unless of course your watching movies.

Ok firstly staring at a screen for long periods of time is not good for, regardless of what type of screen your dealing with. Your advised to take a short break from the screen every hour. New style screens (plasma/LCD,OLED) they dont 'flicker' like old crts & projectors which caused extra strees on your eyes. The only difference between computer monitors and tvs is TVs had aeriels and are low resolution while pc monitors dont have the ability to recieve tv signals and are generally higher resolution. Some would say LCD is worse than plasma because of the brightness of the screen (but theres nothing turn the brightness down). Just don't sit close to the screen, keep the brightness inline with the ambient light in the room and you should be fine.
